Creating rusty iron roof plates

In my Goose on the loose diorama, I wanted rusty corrugated irons sheets on the roof.
I bought a tool on the internet which is actually used to squeeze the paint out of paint tubes to make the wave pattern on the plates. The plates are made from metal from food containers.

After cutting the plates and running them through the "wave machine", I painted them medium grey, and attached them with blue tack to a piece of cardboard. This enables me to mass produce the iron plates.
Various rusty colors are added using a sponge. (Last picture).
After the rust colors were applied, I added water to various spots on the metal sheets. Then I sprinkled salt over the sheets. The salt attaches to the water.
Then I airbrushed various grey tones over the sheets.
When the paint was dry, I brushed off the salt. That made the rust colors to show in a very random pattern. This is the "salt technique".
